The Bat Emergence at Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area between Comfort and Fredricksburg, Texas. 3,000,000 Mexican Free Tailed bats emerge just before sunset depending upon the heat and humidity in the night air. The bats head South towards the Guadalupe River in search of a wide area of water before hunting for food in the night. They come out of the tunnel and then when approaching the trees they spiral up, creating what has been called the bat tornado and up into the night air, heading across the tree tops. The Emergence lasts for about 30 minutes at this location. At Bracken cave, closer to San Antonio, the emergence of 40,000,0000 bats lasts about 4 to 5 hours.
