Dave Turner - Theatre Bassist's video: System of a Down Shavo Odadjian : Chop Suey bass cover

In this video I recreate Shavo Odadjian's bass line to the System of a Down song "Chop Suey", from their 2001 album "Toxicity." I do not own this music. This video is for educational purposes only. Shavo got a lot of smack talk for this bass line on the "isolated bass" track that can be found on YouTube. It's easy to sit in the comfort of your own home and listen to his isolated track and think, "wow, not real tight", and you're not wrong. But after recording this track for this video and one other collaboration, I totally understand why. Basically, everyone is playing 16th notes, but the soundscape is so dense, it's hard to hear who is doing what, who is "correct", and where do we all agree to put the beat. The bass being in Drop D tuning, and being run through overdrive doesn't help. The notes are in unexpected places, and the tone of the bass gets lost in the cymbals and overdriven guitar. All of those little things add up to a state of mental uncertainty about where the beat is, and coming out of each phrase is kind of a "crapshoot."
