David Savery Electrical Services's video: The non-destructive self destruct

@The non-destructive self destruct
The problem with trying to make a practical effect where a spaceship explodes is that one cannot simply shove a firework up its bottom, light the blue touch paper and retire to a safe distance. Well, one could do that, but one would have to be damn sure it’s all going to go swimmingly on the first take, otherwise all the bits of plastic that just got shot to bits will have to be swept up and stuck back together for take two! So, who knew it would be this much work? Well, I kinda did as this idea’s been in the back of my hangover for three years now, so I’m bloody glad something is finally edited and done. And let’s face it, I’m not Industrial Light and Magic here, just a lowly spark whose wasting his weekends desperately trying to make his electrical videos 11% more interesting by adding silly effects. As for the number of takes, well this little lot ain’t even all of ‘em! And there were at least two occasions where I forgot to press Record. Laugh? Why, I nearly spilled my Pimms & lemonade! Despite some flashy cameras, the best results were obtained from my Galaxy mobile phone which had to be placed under a sheet of glass while gravity did its thang and sprinkled debris down from on high. I was rather disappointed by my Insta360 camera whose output was… sludgier... than my Samsung. The ‘navigation lights’ were driven by a 7400 quad two-input nand gate just because I already had one made up from a previous project, although a 555 timer would have been more suitable for the PP3 battery. The 7400 is TTL, so there’s a 5V regulator also on the backside of the model. As stated, the capacitors are switchable to give a fairly even flash rate whether filming at normal or high speed. The flyby shot uses a 200uF cap, the detonation shot uses a 22uF. Lawks-a-lawdy, did I get through some 5A fusewire! And, may I say, not all fusewire is made equal. Some blew with a theatrical shower of sparks, other brands just kinda fizzled and melted. Of the three candidate takes, I initially went with number one, however that video got copyright stomped by YT because of the Tardis sound employed near the end of the video. Some asshole has apparently used it in a music track, so heaven forfend if anyone else ever thinks of using it! While editing to change that sound, I figured Candidate 2 was perhaps a better choice and went with that. Now the more I look at it, the more I think Candidate 3 should have been awarded the job. Still, I can’t be arsed to edit it further now. The missus is threatening to leave me if I don't stop pratting about with little spaceships! Anyway, do enjoy seeing a mackerel tin blow up about a hundred times. The wife and I sure enjoyed it when Take 117 was underway at 1:00 AM last Sunday morning. Oh yes.
