David Savery Electrical Services's video: Lousy LED lighting

@Lousy LED lighting
LED lighting should be a wonderous thing. Sadly, manufacturers of all marques are churning out rubbish with high failure rates because they’re cutting corners. A fraction of a penny saved by using a lower quality capacitor here or a lower spec LED chip there reduces production costs, but for us it means the promises we make to our customers about the longevity and eco credentials of switching to LED get blown out of our backsides when we’re called back just months later because of a failure that leaves the whole thing spinning onto the e-waste pile as there’s nothing serviceable. It's frustrating because the technology is sound, yet manufacturers who once proudly stamped their logo onto quality products are today prepared to punt garbage without any care as to how their reputation is tarnished. From budget brands to household names, all they seem focussed on is selling you a new luminaire that uses less energy… and what does it matter if it fails two weeks out of warranty with no replaceable parts later down the line? So, join two miserable old men who are sick of pulling out well-built older lighting technologies that still have years of service to offer, and we’ll show you some of the new cack we’re being tasked to put in under bold claims of it all being eco-friendly… which it isn’t. A couple of asides which I’m sure will crop up in the comments – Timeguard floodlights are notable for the fact they aren’t prewired and have detachable PIRs. They’re also pretty well made from our experience and tend to be our go-to for sensor lighting. Although Luceco have taken a kicking on my social media channels lately following my personal experience of their product failures out in the field, their Eco Climate LED battens are nonetheless a fine product and more information on those can be found in the link below. https://www.luceco.com/uk/products/industrial/eco-climate-t8 I should also say that in a video last year we showed what savings could be made by switching from incandescent to LED and I stand by that despite this video accusing many LED products of being gash. Conversion to LED is a fine thing, but the message I’m trying to get across here is that you must select a brand you can trust, if such a thing exists, and it’s best to use solutions that allow for servicing. GU10 downlights are our go-to over integrated. LED battens, such as the Eco Climate range, are our preference over any model where the driver or LED strip cannot be easily changed when they fail. Floodlights with removable, replaceable PIRs, such as the Timeguard models, are better than all-in-one affairs that aren’t made to be repaired. Apologies for the on-site audio which is poor because this was filmed after the Karen video and before CEF Live which is where I found the microphone adaptor Karen had kidnapped was no longer functioning.
