@Authentic TRINIDADIAN FOOD with @Nina Unrated !! 10+ Trini Breakfast Dishes in South Florida
🧳NINA: https://www.instagram.com/ninaunrated 🇹🇹 RESTAURANT: https://www.instagram.com/joysroti 🌎 MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG: https://davidsbeenhere.com/ As some of you may know, I traveled to Trinidad and Tobago in March of 2022 and had the time of my life! I fell in love with the people and the cuisine, and after I got back home, I wanted to share my new love of Trini food with a friend! Come with me as I take NinaUnrated to have Trini breakfast food in Fort Lauderdale, Florida! For this food adventure, we drove up to Joy’s Roti Delight in Fort Lauderdale. The restaurant has been making authentic Trinidadian food since 1992! Inside, we met some of the staff and went into the kitchen. 👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH: https://teespring.com/stores/davids-been-here There, we watched the cooks rolling out the bara, which are dough balls that they flatten and fry for a few seconds. Bara is the main ingredient in doubles, a Trini staple! They were also making pholourie, which are savory fritters made from split pea batter seasoned with spices and hot peppers. We also saw them make some aloo pie. They also had some mango-apple-tamarind chutney, a spicy chutney, and a cucumber salad. I took the pholourie out of the vat of oil and watched them make dal puri. It’s basically a massive paratha made from split peas. They flattened it out, brushed it with ghee, and grilled it. They also made a 22-inch paratha, which they brushed with oil and grilled on the flat top. The dishes are all vegetarian, but you can add meat if you want. Then, they constructed the doubles with chickpeas and cucumber. Finally, we were ready to eat! We started with the doubles. Mine was a triple (3 baras with chana and cucumber, with chutneys). You’re supposed to eat each bara in two big bites! I added some peppers to mine to make them spicy. They were fluffy, moist, and flaky. The fruit chutney made it super sweet. I loved how fresh it was. Then, we had some Solos, which is a Trini soda you traditionally pair with doubles. We had banana flavor and Kola Champagne flavor, as well as Apple J flavor. Next were the pholouries, aloo pies, paratha, curry goat, curry shrimp, tomato choka, bhaigan choka (eggplant), pumpkin, curry potatoes, curried green beans, curry conch, and dal puri roti. First was the paratha with the curry conch. I love conch, and this one was so tender. The texture was amazing. It’s better than the fried conch you get in the Bahamas! The Apple J was refreshing and light on the carbonation. The curry shrimp is almost like Spanish garlic shrimp. They’re so succulent and flavorful! Using the paratha to soak up the curry was the best! The pholourie with mango-tamarind chutney was great, and the chili chutney was so hot! They were like Indian bondas. I loved the curry goat with the dal puri. It was really tender. Next were all of the chokas, the pumpkin, and aloo curry with the paratha. The eggplant choka was smoky with a bit of heat, while the pumpkin was sweet. The tomato was like a salsa, and the green beans were amazing. Next were the aloo pies. They’re like big samosas and full of spiced potatoes. You can add anything to them, including meat, chutneys, and more. The goat with the sweet chutneys was incredible! Then, we finished up with the cassava pone for dessert. They’re like dense but soft cakes, like a dense bread pudding with grated coconut. What an amazing Trinidadian breakfast! Where have you been?
