Allen’s “Hendersonia,” Colin Hancock, Allan Sutton, and Javier Soria Laso. In 1920, 22 year old Fletcher Hamilton Henderson arrived in New York City with the goal of enrolling in Graduate classes at Columbia University. A recent grad of Atlanta University, Henderson planned to build a career in the field, but fate had other plans. While rooming with a fellow pianist who was employed in a Hudson riverboat orchestra, the roommate fell ill and Fletcher stepped into sub. As the illness dragged on, Henderson was given the job of the pianist and word spread of his talents. That fall, he was hired by Pace and Handy Music Co. to be a song demonstrator, and started playing more evening jobs. Ultimately he dropped all interest in chemistry, and by the end of the year he was a full time musician. That October he cut his first record, an unissued test of “Dallas Blues” with Lucille Hegamin. While this was never released, soon after he became a musical director at the new Pace Phonograph Compay, makers of Black Swan Records. Harry Pace had left PAce and Handy to open up the venture, and Henderson was tasked with putting together groupings of musicians to accompany vocalists or record instrumental versions of pop, jazz, and blues tunes of the day. In the following years, a regular roster of musicians began showing up to these sessions, who were to form the nucleus of the Fletcher Henderson band. As time went on and tastes changed, the band began to be featured more, recording earthier and more soulful material, and by mid 1923 their sides were among the hottest and most popular on the market. This set of 20 recordings highlights these formative years in Fletcher Henderson’s career, from his earliest sides as a bandleader and soloist, to the wide variety of work he did as a sideman, to the foundations of his famous sound coming together in the final few sides.
