The cause (and blame) for human deaths from rabies infected dogs cannot squarely rest on the already over-burdened shoulders of our stray dogs. It’s a combination of the following: gross failure of animal birth control measures administered by municipal authorities, serious lack of education & awareness about pre and post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP / PEP), improper wound treatment, lax quality control check on vaccines in RPCs (Rabies Prevention Clinics), zero waste management in endemic rural and urban areas, no provision to display availability of critical supplies on govt e-portals, absence of mass promotion campaigns to promote of adoption of street dogs (for e.g.: state sponsored billboards), need for stricter regulations on pet ownership such as mandatory sterilization & regular vaccinations and finally, the proliferation of breeding practices compounded by social drivers that commodify dogs as status symbols.
