@Story on my plate -Juvenile diabetes -Dietitian Shreya
Story on my plate Juvenile diabetes This story goes way back, it’s about a fashionista, a fighter, a warrior basically a mother who was fighting her own battle as well her daughter’s. I met Mrs. Manju few months back, all dolled up a health enthusiast herself she looked beautiful that day but what I couldn’t resist was her deep sobbing voice when she visited my clinic and as soon as she sat next to me she burst into tears and buried her reddened face into her palms. I held her hands tightly and asked the reason behind her sadness as she washed her tears away. “ Shreya mam she said, i am all broken today. My daughter has been diagnosed with Type-I (Juvenile) diabetes, she is just 7 and a half, i can’t let her take the unbearable pain of insulin injections, “ Mrs. Mnaju continued. Just hearing her out was painful as i could resemble her with my own 7 year old daughter. I still remember Sara coming with her mother to the clinic, a cute little girl with curly hair and red was here favourite colour. A young, bubbly and cheerful girl like Sara doesn’t deserve this pain i talked to myself and that was the day when i assured Mrs. Manju that giving Sara the right kind of diet and food choices will definitely help her fight this disease. As I’m a strong believer in the law of attraction, my entire energy was working on Sara’s wellness. I can’t forget the next words uttered by Mrs. Manju” Mam, i’am giving my own life in your hands now. I trust you and it feels like a stake in my chest, so please relieve us from the pain.” As soon as i was handled Sara’s case, i was determined in my mind that i have to treat Sara’s Type-I Diabetes. All the medical tests were done and now it was my duty to explain Sara the importance of every meal she took in her mouth and as she was just a kid i had to modify her diets accordingly so that she enjoyed every meal i had planned for her. A high protein diet with meals like khichri, amaranth porridge which she loved by the way was given and the almond milk which she loved the most. Her body responded very well to the treatment and within the first quarter of it, her fasting levels were improved from 225 to 125-140. On a coming Monday Sara was supposed to meet me in my clinic with her HbA1c reports, but i kept waiting and realised she hadn’t visited my clinic yet, then suddenly we received a message from Sara’s mother that they won’t be able to make it to the clinic today as she ate some sweets at her grandparents house and due to sudden raise in her random sugar levels the test will be delayed for another week. But then hard work pays right and then i got to meet Sara at the next meeting with good news and a bouquet of red roses in her hands telling me excitedly that her insulin had reduced to just 2 shots a day which was 4 shots previously. At that very moment i could see eyes full of tears in Mrs. Manju’s eyes and her father Mr. Anil seemed happy as well. 4 months ago we achieved our target as Sara did not need to take any more insulin shots now. This entire journey is so close to my heart again proving my belief in the law of attraction and taught me another lesson that one determined decision can change your entire life, you can either make it or spoil it forever. Remember there is no harm in taking controlled diet than watching uncontrolled sugars. Take away tip- Sara had normal C-peptide levels i.e. enough insulin levels , that is how she managed to drop the artificial intake . Every story is special in its own kind of way, will be sharing few more of my patient’s and their experience throughout their journey. This is affectionately yours Diettitian Shreya .
