This is Mummified, the stories behind Egyptian Mummies in Museums. The book explores the stories of collecting, viewing, and interacting with ancient mummified Egyptian remains, and if you’ve ever seen a mummy or a fragment of one in a museum, then you need to read this book. My Mummy story begins at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada and travels all the way to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. From first being introduced to Egyptian mummies as objects and part favours for unwrapping parties, and later coming to the realisation that these are real people who need to be treated as such. This brings up the very divisive debate: should human remains be displayed in museums? Does it make a difference if they died 50 years ago, or 3000? Ancient people from all cultures have been taken out of the ground and shipped all over the world. Many of them were stolen, and have been refused the right to return to their homes. These bodies are treated with more fascination and dignity by the rest of the world, and given more privileges than the actual people living in the countries where they came from today. The fact that a dead king has a passport, and has travelled the world with fewer visa restrictions than actual living Egyptians should be raising alarm bells, but instead everyone sees it as a cool, novel thing.
