@How-to Water A Newly Planted Tree With A Garden Hose Using Drip Irrigation Techniques Tutorial
Learn how to water a newly planted tree. When bringing a tree home from the nursery, make sure that the leaves are not exposed to strong wind when the car is moving. The tree is often wrapped in a tarp or burlap to stop wind burn. Trees can get wind burn. Once you have planted a tree, it is important to keep the tree watered. Many people do not adequately water their trees, and then the tree dies. Be sure to consult a tree nursery person about the water needs of your tree. Natural wood chips also help retain the soil moisture. Most people water their tree the wrong way. They take the hose and turn it on full and pour a lot of water around the tree. The soil cannot absorb the water fast enough, and the water runs along the ground away from the tree, and away from the roots. The roots of the tree only get a little bit of water. This is not good. The soil needs a good soaking, so that the roots can grow. It sometimes takes months for a tree to establish a root system. When it’s cold, the tree doesn’t need much water, because the tree is much more dormant. When it is hot outside, the tree needs lots of water. The right way to water a tree is to turn the hose on a very little bit, and slowly drip water onto the tree for hours and hours. The water hose is placed right beside the trunk of the tree, and the water drips into the soil below the tree, and slowly drains down to the roots. The soil gets a deep soak, and the roots get wet. This is what the tree needs to grow and establish a strong root system. This is how I do it. I turn the hose on a very small amount until only a very small amount of water is coming out of the hose. I leave the hose on for many hours. Due to the fact that not much water is coming out of the hose, I’m really not using that much water at all. However, the water is being efficiently transferred to the roots, instead of watering the soil around the tree where the roots are not located. Using this drip irrigation technique, the root ball now gets lots of water. If I have a couple of trees to water, I use a timer and every couple of hours I go outside and move the hose from one tree to the next. Watering trees is a lot of work. This is exactly the same principle which is used in drip irrigation. Israel is famous for drip irrigation, because they use very small amounts of water accurately delivered right to the roots of trees and plants. This is a very efficient system, and it has allowed the desert to bloom and yield fruit. Drip irrigation is used all over the world. Using this technique you can use your garden hose like a drip irrigation system, and get that tree properly watered. Now the roots can grow, and the tree will survive. Once the root system has been developed, the tree often does not need to be watered as much as when it is newly transplanted. Big trees often do not need to be watered, because their roots go deep, and can sometimes find other sources of water below ground. Trees can also kind of sweat. Trees are using up lots of water every day. You’ve got to know how much water your tree needs. Some tree species need more water than other trees. Research your tree, or ask the tree nursery person. They often know exactly what type of soil and how much moisture and how much sunlight a particular type of tree needs to thrive and grow. If the tree is looking like it needs more water, then give it some more. If you want a good looking garden, you've got to monitor your garden and take care of the plants, making sure they get watered. Enjoy your garden and Have A Great Day!
