@How-to Develop A Cold Weather Coverall Layering System Tutorial
Learn how to develop a cold weather layering system using coveralls. Coveralls are designed keep your clothes clean, but these clothes can also be adapted for cold weather use. In this video I use different types of clothing in order develop an inexpensive and versatile cold weather work clothes system. Use whatever similar clothes you have available to develop your own cold weather layering system. Use the principles discussed in this video to develop your own system. Test your system out in a variety of different conditions to how it preforms. For example, I’ve tried the system many times, and I know I am comfortable wearing wool until about -6 Celsius, so long as I am moving around a lot. If I am standing still, I need more insulation, so I might wear a down vest over top of the wool. I’ve tested my system, and I know how it will preform under a variety of different conditions. If you discover some problem with your clothing system, then find a creative solution to fix the problem. The more you use the clothing system, the more you discover the strengths and weaknesses of the system. You are constantly looking for ways to make your clothing system better. For example, if you find a better set of coveralls, then use those. If you are still too cold, wear more wool or substitute a down vest. If you think about the problem for a while, you’ll discover a good solution. Get Loose Fitting Clothing The clothing should all be loose so that you can layer one piece of clothing over the next piece of clothing. The clothing should also be loose so that a warm air bubble can be formed around the body. It is easier to move around and work in loose fitting clothing. I buy my coveralls very loose fitting, so that I can layer underneath them. Warm Air Bubble The idea is to create a warm a warm air bubble around your body. This is the same technique the Inuit used for thousands of years when they made the highly effective fur clothing to deal with freezing cold Arctic temperatures. This clothing is all loose fitting so that a warm air bubble can form around the body. Warm air rises, so the warm air does not escape out from underneath the traditional Inuit clothing, but the clothing allows some sweat moisture to exit the clothes. Dealing with Sweat—Take Off A Layer Of Clothing It is also possible to sweat in very cold temperatures, if you are working hard and wearing too much clothing. You don’t want to get cold and wet, in a survival situation this is dangerous, because you can quickly lose lots of heat. Once you are cold and wet and shivering, your brain has difficulty making good judgements. Try to avoid sweating, because this makes your clothing wet, and can cause problems later on in the day, if you are standing around in the cold and body is no longer producing lots of heat because you aren’t doing lots of physical activity. The reason you are wearing layers is so that when you are too hot, you can take off some clothing. The clothing can be stored in a backpack if necessary. Ideally, you want to stay warm just before the point of sweating. If you are starting to sweat, take off a layer of clothing. The first thing you take off when you are too hot is your hat, because lots of heat escapes through the head. A bare head in cold weather works like a radiator on a car—once your head is exposed to cold air you will often cool down quite quickly. Once you are feeling cold, put on the hat again. If this doesn’t work, take off a layer of clothing. As you are doing lots of physical activity, you are using lots of energy, and your body is creating heat. When you are standing around and not moving much, your body is producing less heat. When you are doing lots of physical activity, your body produces more heat. This is why I dress in layers, so that I can continually customize my clothing and regulate my body temperature. Once you know how to use the layer technique, it is actually quite comfortable to work outside in the cold, because you can perfectly control your body temperature just by putting on layers of clothing or taking them off. This technique is actually quite simple. This technique can be the difference between being miserable and cold and being quite comfortable in the cold weather. Once your body is warm, the heat from your body will be transferred from your warm core to your cooler extremities (feet and hands) because warm blood flows through the whole body. If your core is warm, your fingers and feet won’t get cold nearly as quickly. Staying warm is relatively easy once you know how to do it. You can’t use this layering system in the summer. Once you’re overheated and sweating in the hot summer sun while wearing shorts and T-shirt, using a layering system isn’t going to work, because the outside temperature is already too hot. Use the cold weather to your advantage I hope that this clothing system keeps you warm in the winter. Stay work safe and Have A Great Day!
