Film przedstawia historię Leny i Katii, które przez prawie cztery lata były przetrzymywane w piwnicy, poddawane psychicznym i fizycznym torturom. Tragedia, do której doszło w 2000 r., rozegrała się w Riazaniu. Czynu dokonał 53-letni robotnik Wiktor Mochow, który zwabił do samochodu 14-letnią Katię i 17-letnią Lenę, a następnie odurzył je środkiem nasennym. Ofiary uwięził w piwnicy. Lena w niewoli urodziła dwóch synów. Dziewczęta zdołały przekazać informacje, gdzie są więzione. Odzyskały wolność 4 maja 2004 r.
