Dr. Lewis explains why a sex addiction in particular corresponds to Oliver's family background. "Before becoming Green Arrow, Oliver Queen was an orphaned child who inherited a massive family fortune. He lived as a wealthy playboy, indulging in alcohol, and especially women. But why would women be such a weakness for Oliver? There's something about Oliver's loss unique to Oliver that he needed to get something more than his share in a sense. He needed to get something, and what he seemed to need is frequent sexual contact with, I'm assuming, attractive, sexy women, without the entanglement of commitment or the terror of abandonment. So he got all of the nurturing without any of the loss. It's why people go to prostitutes. You're not paying them for sex; you're paying them to leave. In other words you get the connection, but you don't have to deal with the loss and the abandonment issues. Oliver has traumatic abandonment issues. When you just are orphaned, it's an unnatural state. You're usually not ready for it - because the word is usually applied to kids - and you're spinning. Anybody that's orphaned, anybody that suffers the loss of anchoring people in one's life, you can't understand the pain and the depletion of being that that does. Those are our anchors. They're taken away. He grabbed a hold of what the eating disorder people call 'comfort food.' These were comfort markers. Mommy left me and daddy left me. I have nothing to bounce off of and define [myself]. I have my sexuality, and each time I connect to a woman, and each time I have sex with her I can feel my sense of self to the best I can at that moment. In other words, I'm having neural contact; I'm having physiological arousal; I'm having a human being that's probably being pleasured too. So the whole cycle becomes one of 'That's as close as I can get to feeling alive and feeling an individual.' "
