Part of Maharashtra has received the heaviest spell of rain for July in 40 years.This heavy rainstorm has also lead to 2 landslides, killing at least 36 people in the state. At least 32 people were killed in a landslide in Taliye village of Mahad Taluka in Raigad on July 23. In another landslide, four people died in Poladpur, which is also a landslide-prone area. 30 people are reported trapped and around 35 houses were buried under debris due to the landslide. The Ratnagiri and Raigad districts of Maharashtra have been tormented by continuous downpour over the past 24 hours. As many as 12 local relief teams, including the Indian Navy, coastguard and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in the area.Teams have rescued over 1,000 people so far. The rescue operations are finding it difficult to reach the incident locations due to heavy waterlogging. As per the district administration, 110 villages in the Raigad district are landslide-prone and out of these 20 are particularly at risk. The IMD has also predicted an increase in widespread rainfall activity in the northeastern states of India from July 26 onwards.
