The irony here is really the judge's comment that because this baby, although beaten with a kitchen utensil, did not have any broken bones, that the child would therefore completely recover. Completely recover? Are you serious? So, does that mean that we are simply the sum total of our physical parts alone? Indeed, the emotional scars of abusing a baby less than 12 months old will haunt that little girl emotionally for the rest of her life. You see, according to Erik Erikson, an established theorist and psychologist, those first months up to 18 months of age are critical to laying trust in the environment and trust in your parents and care-givers. Mess that period up and you'll have a "hole" or gap in your emotional and personal development from which you are highly unlikely to recover. Tell that to the judge.
