STRESS – IT HAS BECOME SO COMMON PLACE THESE DAYS THAT I OFTEN WONDER WHAT LIFE WOULD BE LIKE WITHOUT IT. BUT WHAT IF WE COULD JUST STOP AND BE STILL? IF WE COULD LEARN TO SLOW DOWN AND QUIET THE CHATTER IN OUR MINDS AND JUST BE AWARE OF THE PRESENT MOMENT WITHOUT THE CLUTTER FROM THE PAST OR THE WORRY OF THE FUTURE. WOULD IT BE HELPFUL, WOULD IT BE HEALING AND WOULD IT HAVE THE ABILITY TO TRANSFORM OUR LIVES? IT USED TO BE THE ONLY TIME I WOULD REALLY FEEL LIKE I WAS FREE OF STRESS WAS WHEN I WAS ON VACATION AND MY RESPONSIBILITIES WERE LEFT BEHIND. BUT THEN, AFTER A FEW DAYS OF DOWNTIME, I WOULD BEGIN TO REALIZE THE WEIGHT OF THE STRESS I HAD BEEN CARRYING AROUND. AND, IF I DOUBTED IT IN THE MOMENT, IT WOULD CERTAINLY HIT ME LIKE A TON OF BRICKS IMMEDIATELY UPON RE-ENTRY INTO MY LIFE. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE HAVING A FEW DAYS OFF TO LET GO OF THE STRESS, ONLY TO REALIZE THE WEIGHT OF THAT STRESS WHEN YOU HAVE TO STRAP IT BACK ON AND BEGIN TO CARRY IT WITH YOU AGAIN. TODAY WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS ON A DAILY BASIS THROUGH MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION. AND MORE SPECIFICALLY WE ARE GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT THE MINDFULNESS–BASED STRESS REDUCTION PROGRAMS THAT ARE DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE EXPERIENCING THE SIGNS OF STRESS IN DAILY LIFE AND WHO WANT TO ACHIEVE MORE BALANCE, PEACE AND HAPPINESS IN THEIR LIVES. THE PRACTICE OF MINDFULNESS MEDITATION WAS DEVELOPED TO SEE WHETHER THESE MEDITATIVE PRACTICES, INCLUDING MINDFUL HATHA YOGA, COULD HELP MEDICAL PATIENTS TO MOBILIZE THEIR OWN INTERIOR RESOURCES FOR LEARNING, GROWING, HEALING, AND TRANSFORMATION, STARTING FROM WHEREVER THEY WERE AT, AND WITH WHATEVER MEDICAL CONDITIONS THEY WERE DEALING WITH, AS A WAY TO COMPLEMENT THE TREATMENTS THEY WERE RECEIVING. MEDITATION CAN BE PRACTICED FOR MANY REASONS INCLUDING TO COPE WITH ILLNESS AND, THIS PARTICULAR PRACTICE HAS ALSO BEEN FOUND TO SHOW SUCCESS WITH ANXIETY, CHRONIC PAIN, MIGRAINES, INSOMNIA, GASTROINTESTINAL DISORDERS, HEART DISEASE AND IMMUNE SYSTEM FUNCTIONING.
