One of the most remarkable medieval rulers was Frederick II., of Hohenstaufen. He was King of Sicily, Germany and Jerusalem and he was Holy Roman Emperor. His interest in science and his tolerance of religious minoreties proved him as a very modern human. His self-conception as Emperor proved him as romantic and as authocrat. His rivalry with the Pope lead to his downfall. Frederick was the "Astonishment of the World".
