This groove was inspired by Maurice White's drumming (founder of Earth, Wind & Fire) on the Ramsey Lewis Trio's song "Wandering Rose" from the album Another Voyage, where Maurice uses his hi-hat to pre-empt the backbeat, placing it on the "a" of beats 1 and 3. This particular beat is a coordination workout between the right and left feet, and that last bar of the phrase is so cool I couldn't help but loop it at the end.
