Drew can be found at www.DSdrums.com Weekly Grooves # 5 - this beat is inspired by the syncopated, intricate funk of David Garibaldi, the iconic drummer from Tower of Power, and one of my heroes as an educator. His instructional materials, books, DVDs, and gracious willingness to chat throughout the years made me want to be a teacher in addition to performing, producing, and composing. This particular beat strives to evoke his use of snare drum ghost notes, as well as an accented hi-hat hit directly after each snare drum backbeat that provides an energetic feel of forward momentum - kind of like a mirror image of the Maurice White hi-hat foot lead in that was a part of last week's video. After a few times through this beat, I start to rest at the beginning of each bar until the open hats on the "and" of 1, allowing for some breathing room.
