Cutacre The Cutacre site was granted planning permission in 2001 for the surface mining of 900,000 tonnes of coal and reworking of the spoil tip. The operation was expected to last for 4 years and began in 2006. The restoration scheme would create over 100 hectares of amenity woodland and wetlands as well as for an area of industrial development. UK Coal is currently working with Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council to promote the Cutacre site through the Local Development Framework process. Bolton Council have identified Cutacre as a key strategic site for future development in Bolton and consequently plans have changed. There has been a long campaign against the proposals by residents in Over Hulton and Little Hulton. About the reserve Cutacre has been transformed from an overgrazed piece of grassland into a haven for all kinds of wildlife. Our own herd of rare-breed longhorn cattle gently graze the reserve in a sustainable, low-impact way that creates perfect conditions for some of our most iconic farmland birds. Lapwings, oystercatchers and redshanks all breed in the shorter, softer grass and can be seen pottering around the reserve. Keep your ears pricked for the joyous song of the skylark as it flutters high above, joining the waders to nest during spring and summer. Turn your attention to the trees and pond-side vegetation and you may spot grasshopper warblers, reed buntings, lesser redpolls, linnets and, most excitingly, rare willow tits; an icon of the Greenheart of Wigan. Kestrels and barn owls drift silently over the grass in search of voles, and snipe forage around the edge of ponds that act as a safe haven for five amazing amphibians, including great crested newts. Stealthy visitors who step gently may be rewarded with sightings of brown hares hunkering down near our newly planted hedges. Peep into Cutacre’s ditches and you may even spot Britain’s fastest declining mammal, the water vole, as it scurries through the bankside vegetation. The ancient district of Hulton containing three townships, Over Hulton, Middle Hulton and Little Hulton, was recorded as Helghtun and Hulton in 1235, Hilton in 1278 and 1292, and Hulton in 1292, although Hilton was still used until the 17th century. Historically Little Hulton was a village in the ancient Deane parish with a chapel, sometimes called Peel Chapel. The chief manor was held by the Hultons at Hulton Park in Over Hulton. We’re over the moon to see all our hard work at Cutacre reaping rewards for wildlife. By restoring species-rich meadow we are not only protecting a rare habitat, but creating homes for all kinds of creatures. Wildflowers like ragged robin and meadowsweet now have room to regrow amongst the shorter grass; offering invaluable sources of nectar to bees, butterflies and moths. And hopefully, it won’t be long before we see yellowhammers, meadow pipits and even black-tailed godwits showing off to visitors. Logistics North is one of the largest and most successful developments of its kind to be brought forward in the north of England. Envisaged as a hub for both manufacturing and logistics operations, Logistics North scheme will deliver over 4 million sq ft of bespoke Grade A industrial buildings in a range of sizes once fully developed, in addition to a 550-acre country park. Built on the former Cutacre surface mine site where deep mining operations have also taken place, the Logistics North scheme has already delivered over 3m sq ft of commercial space since receiving initial outline planning consent in December 2013. Once fully developed, the site is expected to deliver over £300m of Gross Value Added to the local economy in addition to over 7,000 jobs.
