Since I was a child—maybe the age of 9 or 10—I’ve had a strong tendency to hold on to things past their time. First it was our family unit. Then it was the color of my bedroom walls. I protested like hell when we painted them. Then it was our old house. My old life. After childhood, reaching high school, the holding on progressed to more significant, mature, and perhaps relatable things. An aging circle of friends. A snowy town that had served me. A girl I really liked. People I loved who passed away too soon. On the day of our friend’s wake, I drove straight from the service to my mom’s house and released my song “Everything Gets Old” about the toll time takes on our dreams.Moving on from anything has never been easy for me. Moving on from my old way of being and my unaccomplished dreams that I swore would materialize by a certain age. So I cling—to people who love me, to unresolved thoughts, to behavioral patterns, to grudges. And I just don’t ever seem to completely and entirely…let go. Right after my parents split up we moved around a bunch. One of the places we settled temporarily was this small house where I penned some of my first lyrics (god awful ones) and drew a lot of pictures (many of them of X Men, samurais, and the members of Linkin Park). I’ll always remember that house because it felt unfinished. Not metaphorically, literally. The kitchen wasn’t painted, the flooring was missing some kind of wood or tiling, the screen door creaked and swung loose like a beat poet. Most of all, the basement was unfinished. We wouldn’t even go down there because we were afraid of what we’d find. It wasn’t a perfect house, and that was alright, because real life isn’t perfect. As I begin to embrace letting things go and just fucking living, more and more I’m seeing the importance of accepting the unknown. I believe there’s beauty in unpainted walls and unrequited love. I believe there’s joy in being unacknowledged. There’s strength in being an underdog, like I’ve been my whole career. And I believe there’s meaning in unfinished basements. Doing anything worthwhile will start with letting go— Much love & enjoy this song. I got asked enough so I've added it to streaming services.
