@Punta Rock Dance Concert - BROOKLYN 2010 Prt6
There are a variety of possible origins of the punta's intended meaning for the Garifuna dance and music it represents. The word punta is a Latinization of an ancient West African rhythm called bunda, or "buttocks" in the Mandé language. Stylistic origins:Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua Cultural origins:Late 18th century, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala Punta is a dance originated in the Central American coast of Belize, El Salvador Honduras and Guatemala in the late 18th century with African beats for dancing punta The best-known traditional punta dance in Honduras, El Salvador, Belize, Guatemala, and parts of Nicaragua is Punta called banguity, before the arrival of the Garifuna people in Punta Gorda, Roatan, Honduras on April 12, 1797. The first album of recorded traditional punta music was released originally in 1955 in Honduras. Sambunango was made famous by Gatos Bravos of Honduras with a song released in 1987; it's known as the first commercially produced punta dance music song from Honduras. The most famous song of punta music is Sopa De Caracol, made famous by Banda Blanca. The song was originally written by Belizean singer Hernan "Chico" Ramos, and translated into Spanish by Banda Blanca. It is most popular in its native Honduras. The diaspora of Garinagu people, commonly called the "Garifuna Nation", dates back to the amalgamation of West African slaves and the Arawak and Carib Amerindians. Punta is used to reaffirm and express the struggle felt by the indigenous population's common heritage through cultural art forms, such as (Punta) dance and music, and to highlight their strong sense of endurance. Besides Belize, punta dancing also has a following in Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Southern Mexico and the United States. Lyrics may be in Garifuna, Kriol, English or Spanish. However, most songs are performed in the indigenous Arawak and Carib-based languages of the Garinagu and are often simply contemporary adaptations of traditional Garifuna songs. Being the most popular dance in Garifuna culture, the punta dance can be performed at wakes, holidays, parties, ancestral celebrations, and other social events. Dancing Punta is iconic of Garifuna ethnicity and modernity, and can be seen as a poetic folk art that connects older cultures and rhythms with new sounds. Chumba and hunguhungu, circular dances in triple rhythm, are often combined with dancing punta. www.EDITyourVIDEO.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/EDITyourVIDEO Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/edityourvideo https://www.facebook.com/OnDaSpotLIVE Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/edityourvideo/ facebook.com https://www.facebook.com/CaribbeansSee/ https://www.facebook.com/OnDaSpotLIVE/?fref=ts https://www.facebook.com/StrandedNdangriga/?fref=ts https://www.facebook.com/EDITyourVIDEO-239787136066899/?fref=ts YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/user/goastafa https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3W_bI9N_RVEn9i_ZeO3O3w
