The India VIX index has gained 23 percent on average in the last 5 years in the first month of the calendar year while the 10-year average stands at 18 percent. The Nifty has declined during each of the last 3 times in January while Nifty Bank has declined twice in the last 2 years during the same time. However, both indices have gained 0.5 percent on average during the last 5 years. The Nifty Small & Midcap indices have underperformed and declined less than a percent each in the last 5 years during January.
