@ETRAFFIC Presents: What is Boxing Day?
We celebrate BOXING DAY on the 26th of December But have you ever wondered what Boxing Day really is? How it came about? And Where it originated from? Boxing Day is celebrated in the United Kingdom, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and other European countries. Different nations have different ways of celebrating this annually: In the UK, football and rugby union matches are held. In Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, test cricket matches are on. And in Surrey, England, a prestigious horse race is lined up. There have been quite a few theories as to the history of Boxing Day. Some historians claim that it began in the UK, 800 years ago, where in churches open big collection boxes containing donations for the less-fortunate. There are those who say that Boxing Day came about because servants had to wait a day after Christmas to be able to visit their families and their employers would hand them gift boxes to take home. Up to this day, the real story behind Boxing Day is unlcear. The truth is, it is just often referred to as “The Holiday After Christmas”. We may have different ways of celebrating BOXING DAY. It may just be another unremarkable non-working day for some… But the real meaning of this day has always been rooted on selfless acts and gift giving.
