_exam _khalil _wintersundays Sundays too my father got up early and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold, then with cracked hands that ached from labor in the weekday weather made banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him. I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking. When the rooms were warm, he’d call, and slowly I would rise and dress, fearing the chronic angers of that house, Speaking indifferently to him, who had driven out the cold and polished my good shoes as well. What did I know, what did I know of love’s austere and lonely offices? ''Those Winter Sundays'' is a poem written by Robert Hayden, published in 1962. The poem portrays an adult who has found a new perspective on their father's actions during their childhood. Through reflecting on the past, the subject of the poem has found a new appreciation for all the little ways their father showed affection. The poem, only 14 lines long, is split into three paragraphs. In the first paragraph, the speaker recounts how their father would get up early on Sunday mornings and light fires throughout the house to warm it during winter. Despite being worn out from his job, he never received any praise for doing so.
