I just bought a used Rouge Herringbone 12-string acoustic for a good price from Musician's Friend to convert it into an 8-string lap steel, but not like a traditional 8-string steel guitar. It still is a six course instrument, but the 1st and 2nd strings are doubled up in unison. All I did was make a new TUSQ saddle and bone nut, remove the four extra tuners, and strung it up. It's tuned to open C # with a regular D'Addario .013-.056 nickel electric set on it.
