Edgar Fabián Frías's video: Responding to NFT hate

Responding to this comment I saw on the Moonbeaming Podcast for the episode I was just on with @gottesss and wanted to share a few thoughts about it. Click here to listen to this episode: https://moonbeaming.simplecast.com/episodes/make-room-for-your-art-time-magic-nfts-and-unlearning-capitalist-panic-with-edgar-fabian-frias Unfortunately, when NFTs first emerged there was a huge smear campaign that called NFTs everything from “stupid” and “pointless” to “the end of the planet as we know it”. I honestly believe that some of these tactics have been used to keep certain people out from the NFT space and make room for other kinds of people (cis str8 wh1te m3n) to take over and colonize the space. That and NFTs represent a change in how artists see themselves and their art practices. The blockchain allows you to self-ordain as an artist and transparency and resale percentages embedded into all art sold are the norm in the space. These things have angered certain people who are gatekeepers in the art world and/or who benefit from opacity, hierarchies, and artists not being paid for their work. (Like social media companies?) Last, how much energy/extraction/labor do you think is needed to build the phone you’re using? To run this platform or create paints and canvases for artists to use? We all have to make decisions within this system and these decisions ALL have consequences. It’s problematic when only certain people, like artists, and especially BIPOC, femme, and queer and trans artists have to bear the weight of responsibility for blockchain and cryptocurrency when other people, like investors and businesses, don’t. And we are ALL using USD fiat $$ which is literally funding war and is the most energy-intensive currently on this planet. We are all guilty. We are all being FORCED to engage with these systems. As @gottesss has said on her podcast, this is a year and it means we must seek nuance. Letting go of binaries and black or white thinking and deepening into the complexities that make up our existence. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.
