Edwina Guckian's video: Save Leitrim - STOP the Sitka Spruce Blanket Plantations

I spoke to Jim McCaffrey from Cloone, Co Leitrim last week about Sitka Spruce blanket plantations surrounding his home.. These forestries are everywhere in our county. You don't have to go looking for them. The people want broadleaf forests for the obvious reasons which also bring with them higher premiums for the landowners but the Department won't sanction them for our land. It's apparently incapable of growing hardwoods even though our hedgerows are full of them and natural forests once covered our landscape. People argue that hardwoods won't grow fast and of high quality and any answers I get on this topic always have to do with MONEY and the NOW. It can't always be about the money and the now! What about the communities? Those people that are banging their heads off walls trying to stop conifer plantations surrounding their homes with darkness. Have the government spoken to any of these people? They won't have to go far to find them. What about the people who don't have a voice? Or the people who don't have the power, courage or money to stand up for their rights? What about the wildlife? The environment? The future generations? Why does it always have to be about greed and the rich getting richer? In such a society in which nearly everybody is dominated by someone else's mind, it becomes increasingly more difficult to learn the truth about the activities of governments and corporations, about the quality or value of products, or about the health of one's own place and economy. But whether we and our politicians know it or not, Nature is party to all our deals and decisions and she has more votes, a longer memory and a sterner sense of justice than any of us do.
