THE MOVIE LOCATIONS. This classic 1968 World War 2 film, starring Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood and Mary Ure, was filmed in at various locations in Austria, most notably Werfen, Lofer and Ebensee. The 'Schloss Adler' features heavily in the film and is actually the castle 'Burg Hohenwerfen' that dominates Werfen. Although the film appears to be set in one location, the railway station and exterior castle shots were filmed at Werfen, whilst the street scenes and bar at 'Werfen' were actually filmed at Lofer. When they escape from the cable car, they fall into a river at Ebensee (in the film Werfen) before swimming to the bank and getting on the bus at Lofer!! The cable car base station was also filmed at Ebensee. (The cable car station at the castle was a studio set and model.) No cable car exists at Burg Hohenwerfen, only a small service lift. The castle is not really as high up as it appears in the film but the backdrop and model used help create a much more dramatic impression.
