Emma Farrell's video: Freediving surface buddying demonstration 2

When you learn to freedive with Go Freediving, right from the get go we expect you to be a safe and effective buddy. It doesn't matter if you haven't yet left the surface yourself, or if you have any equalisation issues, surface buddying is a skill that everyone can have. We use surface buddying with beginner freedivers, or when the diver is doing a shallow warm up or recreational dive. Here is our quick start guide to surface buddying. 1) Discuss with the diver what they are going to do 2) The buddy moves away from the buoy to give the diver room to relax and start their descent 3) When the diver has started their dive, the buddy moves to the line, holds on and watches from the surface 4) As the diver ascends, the buddy moves so they are next to the diver and the buoy is not between them 5) When the diver surfaces, the buddy puts one hand on the line beneath the hand of the diver, the other lightly under their armpit 6) The buddy then tells the diver to breathe, uses their name and models correct recovery breathing for them In this film, instructor Wayne also shows the correct preparation for a freedive: 1) Quick deep breath in 2) Full breath out 3) Full breath in (3 stages) 4) Snorkel out 5) Equalise on the surface ('prequalisation') 6) Start the descent (in this case for a free immersion dive) On the way back up, he runs the line between his finger and thumb to ensure he is close enough to the line and able to hold on at the surface for support.
