The Dhaka river port has a recorded existence since the Mughal Empire. The Mughal viceroy's fortress was built by the port in the 17th century. Dhaka's strategic riverine location in Bengal made it a hub for Eurasian traders, including Armenians, the Portuguese, French, Dutch and British. The city's riverbanks were dotted with mansions, bazaars and warehouses.[2] The bustling old city was known as the Venice of the East.[3] It was used for exports of cotton muslin, silk, jute, rice and other goods. During British rule, the riverfront hosted the offices of the Magistrate and Collector; and became the center of the colonial city.[4] Bengali aristocrats built numerous palaces on the riverfront, including Ahsan Manzil and Ruplal House. The British developed ghats (wharfs), such as Wiseghat, Sadarghat and Northbrook Hall ghat.[5] Paddle steamers were a common sight. The Viceroy of India often traveled by ship from Calcutta to Dhaka's riverside palaces for balls and parties. āĻ¸āĻĻāĻ°āĻ˜āĻžāĻŸ āĻŦā§āĻĄāĻŧāĻŋāĻ—āĻ™ā§āĻ—āĻž āĻ¨āĻĻā§€ āĻĨā§‡āĻ•ā§‡ āĻĸāĻžāĻ•āĻž āĻļāĻšāĻ°ā§‡ āĻĒā§āĻ°āĻŦā§‡āĻļ āĻĒāĻĨā§‡ āĻāĻ•āĻŸāĻŋ āĻŦāĻŋāĻ°āĻžāĻŸ āĻ˜āĻžāĻŸāĨ¤ āĻāĻŸāĻŋ āĻ†āĻšāĻ¸āĻžāĻ¨ āĻŽāĻžā§āĻœāĻŋāĻ˛ā§‡āĻ° āĻ¸āĻŽā§āĻŽā§āĻ–āĻāĻžāĻ—ā§‡āĻ° āĻāĻ•āĻŸā§ āĻŦāĻžāĻŽ āĻĻāĻŋāĻ•ā§‡ āĻ…āĻŦāĻ¸ā§āĻĨāĻŋāĻ¤āĨ¤ āĻ¸āĻĻāĻ°āĻ˜āĻžāĻŸ āĻŦāĻžāĻ•āĻ˛ā§āĻ¯āĻžāĻ¨ā§āĻĄ āĻŦāĻžāĻāĻ§ā§‡āĻ° āĻ•ā§‡āĻ¨ā§āĻĻā§āĻ°āĻŦāĻŋāĻ¨ā§āĻĻā§āĨ¤ āĻŽā§‚āĻ˛āĻ¤ āĻ…āĻ¨ā§āĻ¯āĻžāĻ¨ā§āĻ¯ āĻ¸ā§āĻĨāĻžāĻ¨ āĻĨā§‡āĻ•ā§‡ āĻĸāĻžāĻ•āĻžāĻŽā§āĻ–ā§€ āĻ¨ā§ŒāĻ•āĻž, āĻ˛āĻžā§āĻš āĻāĻŦāĻ‚ āĻāĻŽāĻ¨āĻ•āĻŋ āĻ›ā§‹āĻŸ āĻ“ āĻŽāĻžāĻāĻžāĻ°āĻŋ āĻœāĻžāĻšāĻžāĻœ āĻ¨ā§‹āĻ™āĻ° āĻ•āĻ°āĻžāĻ° āĻœāĻ¨ā§āĻ¯ āĻāĻŸāĻŋ āĻ¨āĻŋāĻ°ā§āĻŽāĻŋāĻ¤ āĻšāĻ¯āĻŧā§‡āĻ›āĻŋāĻ˛āĨ¤ āĻ¨āĻĻā§€āĻ—āĻ°ā§āĻā§‡āĻ° āĻĒā§āĻ°āĻŦā§‡āĻļāĻŽā§āĻ– āĻ…āĻ—āĻā§€āĻ° āĻšāĻ¯āĻŧā§‡ āĻ¯āĻžāĻ“āĻ¯āĻŧāĻžāĻ¯āĻŧ āĻāĻŦāĻ‚ āĻ…āĻā§āĻ¯āĻ¨ā§āĻ¤āĻ°ā§€āĻŖ āĻœāĻ˛āĻĒāĻĨāĻ¸āĻŽā§‚āĻšā§‡āĻ° āĻĒāĻ°āĻŋāĻŦāĻšāĻŖ āĻ•ā§āĻˇāĻŽāĻ¤āĻž āĻšā§āĻ°āĻžāĻ¸ āĻĒāĻžāĻ“āĻ¯āĻŧāĻžāĻ° āĻ•āĻžāĻ°āĻŖā§‡ āĻāĻ–āĻ¨ āĻ†āĻ° āĻāĻ–āĻžāĻ¨ā§‡ āĻŦāĻĄāĻŧ āĻ†āĻ•āĻžāĻ°ā§‡āĻ° āĻœāĻ˛āĻ¯āĻžāĻ¨ āĻāĻŋāĻĄāĻŧāĻ¤ā§‡ āĻĒāĻžāĻ°ā§‡ āĻ¨āĻžāĨ¤ ā§§ā§Žā§¨ā§Ļ-āĻāĻ° āĻĻāĻŋāĻ•ā§‡ āĻ¸āĻĻāĻ°āĻ˜āĻžāĻŸā§‡āĻ° āĻ•āĻžāĻ›ā§‡ āĻĒā§‚āĻ°ā§āĻŦāĻĻāĻŋāĻ•ā§‡ āĻŽā§āĻ¯āĻžāĻœāĻŋāĻ¸ā§āĻŸā§āĻ°ā§‡āĻŸ āĻ“ āĻ•āĻžāĻ˛ā§‡āĻ•ā§āĻŸāĻ°-āĻāĻ° āĻ…āĻĢāĻŋāĻ¸āĻ¸āĻš āĻ…āĻ¨ā§āĻ¯āĻžāĻ¨ā§āĻ¯ āĻŦāĻšā§ āĻ…āĻĢāĻŋāĻ¸ āĻĒāĻ°ā§āĻ¯āĻžāĻ¯āĻŧāĻ•ā§āĻ°āĻŽā§‡ āĻ¸ā§āĻĨāĻžāĻ¨āĻžāĻ¨ā§āĻ¤āĻ°āĻŋāĻ¤ āĻšāĻ¯āĻŧ āĻāĻŦāĻ‚ āĻāĻ° āĻ‰āĻ¤ā§āĻ¤āĻ° āĻĻāĻŋāĻ•ā§‡āĻ° āĻāĻ˛āĻžāĻ•āĻžāĻ¸āĻŽā§‚āĻš āĻ¨āĻ¤ā§āĻ¨ āĻ¨āĻ—āĻ°āĻ•ā§‡āĻ¨ā§āĻĻā§āĻ° āĻšāĻŋāĻ¸ā§‡āĻŦā§‡ āĻ—āĻĄāĻŧā§‡ āĻ“āĻ ā§‡āĨ¤ āĻāĻ–āĻžāĻ¨ā§‡ āĻŽāĻžāĻ¤ā§āĻ° āĻĻā§āĻŸāĻŋ āĻĒā§āĻ°āĻ§āĻžāĻ¨ āĻ°āĻžāĻ¸ā§āĻ¤āĻž āĻ›āĻŋāĻ˛, āĻāĻ•āĻŸāĻŋ āĻĒāĻļā§āĻšāĻŋāĻŽ āĻĨā§‡āĻ•ā§‡ āĻĒā§‚āĻ°ā§āĻŦ āĻĻāĻŋāĻ•ā§‡ āĻāĻŦāĻ‚ āĻ…āĻĒāĻ°āĻŸāĻŋ āĻĻāĻ•ā§āĻˇāĻŋāĻŖ āĻĨā§‡āĻ•ā§‡ āĻ‰āĻ¤ā§āĻ¤āĻ° āĻĻāĻŋāĻ•ā§‡āĨ¤ āĻ°āĻžāĻ¸ā§āĻ¤āĻž āĻĻā§āĻŸāĻŋ āĻ¸āĻĻāĻ°āĻ˜āĻžāĻŸā§‡āĻ° āĻ•āĻžāĻ›āĻžāĻ•āĻžāĻ›āĻŋ āĻ¸āĻŽāĻ•ā§‹āĻŖā§‡ āĻŽāĻŋāĻ˛āĻŋāĻ¤ āĻšāĻ¯āĻŧā§‡āĻ›ā§‡āĨ¤ āĻ…āĻ˛āĻŋ-āĻ—āĻ˛āĻŋāĻ° āĻ…āĻ¨ā§‡āĻ• āĻāĻ˛ā§‹āĻĒāĻžāĻ¤āĻžāĻĄāĻŧāĻŋ āĻļāĻžāĻ–āĻž āĻāĻ–āĻžāĻ¨ āĻĨā§‡āĻ•ā§‡ āĻļāĻšāĻ°ā§‡āĻ° āĻŦāĻŋāĻāĻŋāĻ¨ā§āĻ¨ āĻŽāĻšāĻ˛ā§āĻ˛āĻžāĻ¯āĻŧ āĻšāĻ˛ā§‡ āĻ—ā§‡āĻ›ā§‡āĨ¤ āĻ†āĻœāĻ•āĻžāĻ˛ āĻĒā§āĻ°āĻ§āĻžāĻ¨āĻ¤ āĻĻā§‡āĻļā§‡āĻ° āĻĻāĻ•ā§āĻˇāĻŋāĻŖāĻžāĻžā§āĻšāĻ˛ā§‡āĻ° āĻœā§‡āĻ˛āĻžāĻ¸āĻŽā§‚āĻšā§‡āĻ° āĻ¸āĻ™ā§āĻ—ā§‡ āĻ¯ā§‹āĻ—āĻžāĻ¯ā§‹āĻ—ā§‡āĻ° āĻ‰āĻĻā§āĻĻā§‡āĻļā§āĻ¯ā§‡ āĻļāĻ¤ āĻļāĻ¤ āĻ¨ā§ŒāĻ•āĻž āĻ“ āĻ˛āĻžā§āĻš āĻ†āĻ¸āĻž-āĻ¯āĻžāĻ“āĻ¯āĻŧāĻžāĻ° āĻœāĻ¨ā§āĻ¯ āĻ¸āĻĻāĻ°āĻ˜āĻžāĻŸ āĻŦā§āĻ¯āĻŦāĻšā§‚āĻ¤ āĻšāĻ¯āĻŧāĨ¤ āĻŽāĻžāĻ˛ āĻŦāĻšāĻ¨āĻ•āĻžāĻ°ā§€ āĻŦāĻžāĻ°ā§āĻœāĻ—ā§āĻ˛āĻŋāĻ“ āĻ¸āĻĻāĻ°āĻ˜āĻžāĻŸāĻ•ā§‡ āĻŽāĻžāĻ˛ āĻ“āĻ āĻžāĻ¨ā§‹-āĻ¨āĻžāĻŽāĻžāĻ¨ā§‹āĻ° āĻ•ā§‡āĻ¨ā§āĻĻā§āĻ° āĻšāĻŋāĻ¸ā§‡āĻŦā§‡ āĻŦā§āĻ¯āĻŦāĻšāĻžāĻ° āĻ•āĻ°ā§‡āĨ¤ āĻ¸āĻ°āĻĻāĻ˜āĻžāĻŸ āĻĢāĻ˛-āĻŽā§‚āĻ˛, āĻļāĻžāĻ•āĻ¸āĻŦāĻœāĻŋ āĻ“ āĻŦāĻŋāĻŦāĻŋāĻ§ āĻ¸āĻžāĻŽāĻ—ā§āĻ°ā§€āĻ° āĻāĻ•āĻŸāĻŋ āĻŦā§ƒāĻšā§Ž āĻĻā§ˆāĻ¨āĻŋāĻ• āĻŦāĻžāĻœāĻžāĻ°ā§‡ āĻĒāĻ°āĻŋāĻŖāĻ¤ āĻšāĻ¯āĻŧā§‡āĻ›ā§‡āĨ¤ āĻāĻ–āĻžāĻ¨ā§‡ āĻ–ā§āĻ˛āĻ¨āĻžāĻ° āĻŽāĻ¤ā§‹ āĻĻā§‚āĻ°āĻŦāĻ°ā§āĻ¤ā§€ āĻ¸ā§āĻĨāĻžāĻ¨ā§‡ āĻ¸ā§āĻŸāĻŋāĻŽāĻžāĻ°ā§‡ āĻ¯āĻžāĻ¤ā§āĻ°ā§€ āĻĒāĻ°āĻŋāĻŦāĻšāĻŖā§‡āĻ° āĻœāĻ¨ā§āĻ¯ āĻāĻ•āĻŸāĻŋ āĻŸāĻžāĻ°ā§āĻŽāĻŋāĻ¨āĻžāĻ˛āĻ“ āĻ†āĻ›ā§‡āĨ¤ āĻ¨āĻĻā§€āĻ° āĻ¸āĻŽāĻžāĻ¨ā§āĻ¤āĻ°āĻžāĻ˛ā§‡ āĻ°āĻžāĻ¸ā§āĻ¤āĻž āĻĻāĻŋāĻ¯āĻŧā§‡ āĻ¸āĻĻāĻ°āĻ˜āĻžāĻŸ-āĻāĻ° āĻ¸āĻžāĻĨā§‡ āĻĸāĻžāĻ•āĻžāĻ° āĻŦāĻšā§ āĻ¸ā§āĻĨāĻžāĻ¨ āĻ¸āĻ‚āĻ¯ā§āĻ•ā§āĻ¤ āĻāĻŦāĻ‚ āĻ°āĻžāĻ¸ā§āĻ¤āĻžāĻ° āĻ‰āĻāĻ¯āĻŧ āĻĒāĻžāĻļā§‡ āĻ…āĻ¸āĻ‚āĻ–ā§āĻ¯ āĻ–ā§āĻšāĻ°āĻž āĻ“ āĻĒāĻžāĻ‡āĻ•āĻžāĻ°āĻŋ āĻĻā§‹āĻ•āĻžāĻ¨āĻĒāĻžāĻŸ āĻĻā§‡āĻ–āĻ¤ā§‡ āĻĒāĻžāĻ“āĻ¯āĻŧāĻž āĻ¯āĻžāĻ¯āĻŧāĨ¤ [āĻāĻ¸.āĻāĻŽ āĻŽāĻžāĻšāĻĢā§āĻœā§āĻ° āĻ°āĻšāĻŽāĻžāĻ¨] The Port of Dhaka is a major river port on the Buriganga River in Dhaka, the capital and largest city of Bangladesh.
