@EngineerShrestha Engineer Shrestha Did you know, the GREATEST COACH of INDIAN FOOTBALL was a school TEACHER by profession? YES. You heard it right. He was a Teacher. We are talking about our Legendary Football Guru, Syed Abdul Rahim. Chapter 1 - Teacher He worked as the teacher in Kachiguda Middle School, Urdu Sharif School, Darul-ul-Uloom High School and Chaderghat High School. Played Football for Osmania University & the Dutch Amateur League club HSV Hoek in the Nederlands. Chapter 2 - Poet Rahim was an Urdu poet in private. He always thought Football could be a moving poetry on the field. He wrote a line for his player and asked him to read it. It was written, Gaind se khelna nahi mushkil/gaind bin khelkar jara dekho. Chapter 3- Visionary He really was the Architect of Modern Indian Football. Introduced One-touch football, age-group tournaments and gave specialized training to teenagers. Chapter 4 - Tactician Rahim’s coaching was very methodical. Moves planned for a match were first theoretically explained on a blackboard and were later rehearsed on the ground till the players perfected them. Even before Brazil popularized the 4-2-4 system in the 1958 World Cup, Rahim used this playing system with the Indian team. Chapter 5 - Disciplinarian He encouraged his players, to read, analyze and discuss the game during their spare time. Chapter 6 – Motivator He had invented innovative slogans to motivate his players, like ‘Soccer is a passing game and a game of open spaces,’ ‘Soccer depends upon 2L + 2H [legs, lungs, heart and head]’ and ‘Follow the opponent as soon as you lose the ball.’ Chapter 7 - Psychologist In the dressing room, he made the entire squad hold hands and sing the national anthem Jana Gana Mana. This was also repeated at halftime. The players were inspired as they were compared to freedom fighters trying to uphold the dignity of the country’s flag. Chapter 8 - End of the Golden Era of Indian Football He was born on 17 August 1909 at Hyderabad. Rahim, indeed was a golden coach. Sadly, he had an untimely demise on 11th June 1963 due to lung cancer. And that was the end of the Golden Age of Indian Football.
