@EngineerShrestha Engineer Shrestha Unknown to the popular culture, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was greatly responsible for shaping the Transvaal Indian Football Association in 1896, the first 'organized football association' that was run by non-whites in South Africa During his two-decade stay in South Africa from 1893 till 1915, Bapu started three football clubs, not 1, not 2 but 3, in Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria which is in City of Tshwane. And interestingly he named all the 3 clubs as “Passive Resisters Soccer Club”. He used Football as a means of promoting his ideology of non-violence and passive resistance and that is where the clubs derived their names from. At that time, the concept of team was stronger than the idea of individual star players. This idea of team-work appealed Gandhi and he used it as means to encourage people to join social activism by distributing pamphlets during matches. Through these games, he also aimed to achieve equal rights in the country for the non-white community and raise funds for his fight. It was a first of a kind—using sports for achieving political objectives. Gandhi indeed was a genius with acumen par excellence. Football being an inexpensive sport enjoyed raging popularity among the less fortunate, owing to the team-playing method and goes a long way in showing what actual team spirit is. It was this audience that Gandhi had targeted, it was this audience that faced the most trouble under the dominance of the British settlers. Gandhi’s close associate, the Anglican missionary and ardent votary of Indian independence, Charles Freer Andrews, helped stitch the tour together. The team played 14 matches in Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta and Chennai and Gandhi even spent time with the squad during their stopover in Ahmedabad.
