@1 year of deadlifting progress! #fitness #gymrat #powerlifting #shorts
1 year of deadlifting progress! From failing 275 pounds to easily clearing 395 pounds, an over 120 pound difference! Below are a few factors that led to this strength increase, hopefully at least one of these Willa help improve your deadlifts! Big shoutout to @taye @Carlos and @cory for all the deadlifting advice! - Overcoming overexercising by transitioning from lifting 6 days per week with 7 days of moderate to intense cardio to lifting 4 to 5 days per week with daily low intensity walking. Deadlifting specifically went from twice per week to about 3 times per 2 weeks (or 1.5 times per week) - Eating more. Protein intake is still around 140 to 160g daily but daily calories increased from 1800 to mid 2000s (ED conversation for another day) - Form! For about 2-3 weeks, I deadlifted 95 or 135 pounds focusing on form, cues, and mind muscle connection. - “Jumping” into my deadlift. Jumping straight up and wherever my feet land determined how wide my stance would be and then I would bring my hands as close to outside of my knees so that my forearms and kneecaps tough. - “Sinking” into my deadlift. My main cue used to be removing slack from the bar and engaging my lats, which is still highly important, but alongside this, I also now imagine driving my heels into the ground and “sinking” or “falling” backwards while pulling the weight up, helping with hamstring engagement and minimizing back arch. - Hypertrophy vs strength. Switched from 4x8 at RPE 8 or 9 to 5x5 at 80% of my 1 rep max. If 5x5 feels lightweight for 2 to 3 consecutive deadlifting sessions, I’ll test and adjust my 1 rep max as needed and repeat. - Accessories! I switched from deadlifting in running shoes and no belt to deadlifting with a belt and flat shoes (Vans, Converses, swim shoes, and socks work well!) - - -
