Los instrumentos de viento-metal están compuestos por tubos de metal que además suelen tener varias vueltas o estar enrollados. Tienen válvulas, pistones o varas. Para tocarlos, se suelen utilizar tres o cuatro dedos de una mano mientras que la otra sujeta el instrumento pero no acciona ningún mecanismo. En los de varas, una mano sujeta el instrumento y con la otra alargas o recoges el tubo. El sonido se produce por la vibración de los labios sobre una boquilla metálica de mayor o menor tamaño según el instrumento. Solo por este detalle, es fácil reconocer estos instrumentos.
