Mexicans like their food spicy but they also love their sweets. We tasted Gaznates Mexicanos, a Mexican dessert street food consisting of a cylinder shell filled with sweet meringue. If I asked you to name a few Mexican desserts, you would probably say churros, flan, sopapillas, and tres leches cake. But there are so many more sweets to be found in Mexico. Meringues are popular and they serve it up in all kinds of ways, like these Gaznates. Thin waffles or crepes are filled with very sweet meringue, often enhanced with lemon juice and/or coconut. they may be tricky to find in pastry shops as they are usually sold by street vendors or at fairs. If you see them, don't hesitate to buy them. We only saw them once. Gaznates come from the central states of Mexico and Oaxaca. The name in English means gullet, a word also used in Mexican to describe the throat, reminiscent of the cylindrical shape of the dessert.
