A highlight of our trip was our visit to the Teotihuacan pyramids Mexico. The Aztec Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon are an easy no tour day trip from Mexico City. Located a mere 40 kilometers from Mexico City, the site of Teotihuacan covers 83 sq km and the city itself about 31 sq km. Teotihuacan was the sixth largest city in the world during its zenith around the year 450. The Aztecs were not the first ones here, in fact, they built upon existing ruins dating back to 300 BC. The Pyramid of the Sun was completed sometime around the year 100. The name Teotihuacan was given around 550 and means birthplace of the gods. The Pyramid of the Sun measures 65.5m in height, making it the third largest in the world after the Great Pyramid of Cholula and the Great Pyramid of Giza. The Pyramid of the Moon was mostly used for ritual sacrifices of animals and humans, as well as a burial ground for sacrificial victims. Before you leave at door 3, make sure to visit the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl which contains stone reliefs in its courtyard and some surviving murals representing mostly god-like animals. Teotihuacan started to decline in the 6th century due to drought. The collapse occurred during the 7th or 8th century by sacking and fires, potentially started by the poor as an uprising against the controlling upper classes.
