Robert Covington. 2018 All-Defensive First Team. 2014 NBA G-League All-Star, All-Star MVP, All-NBA G-League First Team, and the NBA G-League Rookie of the Year. For my money, Robert Covington is a tremendous back line defender. He’s not nearly as good an on-ball defender as he is a help guy, but he is TREMENDOUS defensively at erasing the mistakes of his teammates. In the regular season, Robert Covington was 15th in the league in blocks (at 1.3 per game) and 10th in steals (1.6 per game) - joining Anthony Davis and Andre Drummond as the only players who finished in the top 20 in both blocks and steals. Covington finished 6th in the league in deflections. In the playoffs, RoCo’s numbers jumped UP. In his 12 playoff games with the Rockets, he averaged 3.3 deflections (4th in the playoffs, behind Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, and Chris Paul), 2.5 steals (best in the league). If you’re not sure what to look for, try this: when an offensive player gets by his man, how many times would there have otherwise been a layup or a drop-off pass or a score if Covington hadn’t been there? After you get that down - how many times would a regular help defender have that same action. This exercise should hopefully help you realize RoCo is pretty one of a kind.
