Some history behind Chateau de M’Nottebohm (also known as Kasteel van den Heer Nottenbohm and Chateau Maria ter heide) The domain dates back to 1834 when the family Nottebohm bought heathland of the town. However, the castle was only built in 1908-1909 by Otto Nottebohm. The family Nottebohm was a very wealthy family from Antwerp and is known for his numerous initiatives in health care, both in Antwerp and in Brecht he had an institute for skin diseases. The castle domain was built as a country retreat for the family Nottebohm - Kreglinger and was inhabited until 1943 on a regular basis. During World War II it was taken into use by the German army. After the war, the family only came sporadically on holiday. In the 1950s the castle was rented out as hotel and restaurant. Afterwards, it was mostly empty. The sale was made in the 1980s, to no avail. Years of vacancy caused a neglected condition of the exterior and interior largely disappeared. Until this day the castle stands abandoned and forgotten.
