Patch the boot.img kernel with the Magisk binaries [04:01] 6. Copy the magisk_patched file to the PC 7. Boot the Xiaomi POCO M3 into Fastboot Mode [05:31] 8. Connect the smartphone to the PC with a USB cable 9. Install ADB & Fastboot tools (tutorial linked above) 10. Move the magisk_patched into the same folder as your ADB & Fastboot tools 11. Rename that magisk_patched file [07:05] 12. Then open a Command Prompt, Windows PowerShell, or a Terminal in that same folder [07:57] 13. Execute the "fastboot flash boot" command [08:11] 14. Make sure you get two "OKAY" responses for the sending/writing actions [09:13] 15. Reboot the POCO M3 phone [09:36] 16. Check Magisk Manager [10:46] 17. And optionally, you can verify root access with a 3rd-party root checker [11:17] There are a couple of ways we can root the Xiaomi POCO M3 smartphone. Both involve using the Magisk superuser tool, but one method involves manually patching the boot.img file and the other just has you flashing a ZIP file in TWRP. Since I have yet to do a TWRP tutorial for the smartphone (only unofficially supported right now, with bugs), we're going to be doing the first method. Before we can begin though, you need to have the bootloader unlocked. Follow the linked tutorial above if you have yet to complete that. When you're ready, go ahead and download the POCO M3 firmware that matches the exact version of MIUI you're running. We're even able to do this with custom ROMs too. We simply need to download the exact firmware we're currently running on the phone. Extract those contents and look for the boot.img file. This img file needs to be on the POCO M3. But before we can patch it, we need to install Magisk Manager. So go to the official GitHub page and sideload the APK file. Then you can open the Magisk Manager app, tap the Install button, and patch the boot.img file. The process should only take a minute or two and will result in the application spitting out a magisk_patched file in your Downloads folder. This is the file we need to copy/move from the POCO M3 and onto the PC. We need to do this because we're required to flash this patched file with ADB & Fastboot tools. So if you haven't already, go ahead and install the ADB & Fastboot tools. Then copy/move that magisk_patched.img file into the same folder as the adb.exe and fastboot.exe files. Then open a command prompt, windows powershell, or terminal in the same folder as your ADB & Fastboot tools. Now boot the POCO M3 into Fastboot Mode (tutorial linked above) and connect it to the PC with a USB cable. Execute the fastboot flash command listed above and wait for the Fastboot.exe file to flash the magisk_patched.img file to the boot partition of your POCO M3. And that's all there is to it. You can now force the smartphone to reboot back into Android and check your root status. The Magisk Manager app will tell you if the binaries have been installed properly, but you can also use the free Root Checker app from the Play Store as well.
