If you’re doing business with Europe and don’t know the acronym GDPR, you could find yourself in big trouble. GDPR is the General Data Protection Regulation. It controls what data you are allowed to hold on Europeans, how you are allowed to hold that data and how long you are allowed to keep it. GDPR has a very long reach. It’s not just for business operating in Europe, or Facebook and Google. Even small Australian businesses using their websites to sell to Europe are captured by GDPR. The cost of non-compliance is heavy: the maximum fine is up to 4% of global turnover or EUR20m (whichever is greater).
