Follow Extreme Weather on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ExtremeWeatherChannel Satellite and radar imagery show the eye of Matthew marching northward roughly paralleling the northeast Florida coast. Matthew's tropical storm-force wind field (at least 39 mph sustained winds) extends up to 185 miles from the center, and hurricane-force winds extend up to 60 miles from the center. The center of Matthew has remained within 25-40 miles of the northeast Florida coast much of Friday, but has been close enough to bring hurricane-force wind gusts to some coastal areas. Matthew's precarious track, in which the eyewall may scrape the coast with destructive hurricane-force winds, will spread north through Saturday along the northeast Florida coast, the Georgia coast and parts of the South Carolina coast. Storm surge flooding has already occurred along the northeast Florida coast, including in the Daytona Beach, St. Augustine and Jacksonville Beach areas, and has already spread as far north as South Carolina during Friday afternoon's high tide. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jacksonville, Florida, Friday morning, "Barrier islands are likely to be breached and it is extremely possible that new inlets will be cut off in the worst affected areas." The NWS office in Charleston, South Carolina, said Friday that tide levels at both Charleston, South Carolina, and Ft. Pulaski, Georgia, could approach or even surpass those seen during the October 2015 epic flood event. Hurricane Matthew: Death toll soars in Haiti Number of dead in Caribbean nation rises sharply as Hurricane Matthew leaves behind trail of destruction. he number of people killed in Haiti by Hurricane Matthew has risen sharply, as coastal villages and towns began making contact with the outside world, two days after being hit by the fiercest Caribbean storm in nearly a decade. A Reuters news agency tally of deaths reported by civil protection officials at a local level on Friday showed the storm killed at least 842, updating an earlier figure of 572. Rural clinics overflowed with patients whose wounds including broken bones had not been treated since the storm hit on Tuesday. Food was scarce, and at least seven people died of cholera, likely because of flood water mixing with sewage. Bodies started to appear late on Thursday as waters receded in some places after Matthew's 235 kilometres-per-hour winds smashed concrete walls, flattened palm trees and tore roofs off homes, forcing thousands of Haitians to flee. With casualty numbers quickly increasing, different government agencies and committees gave contrasting death tolls on Friday as the storm hit the US state of Florida and began rolling up the east coast. Haiti in crisis after Hurricane Matthew hits Most of the fatalities were in towns and fishing villages around the western end of Tiburon peninsula in Haiti's southwest, with many victims killed by falling trees, flying debris and swollen rivers. At least 50 people were reported to have died in coastal Roche-a-Bateau, which local officials described as "devastated".
