Trembling Landscapes: Between Reality and Fiction tentoonstelling 19 september 2020 t/m 3 januari 2021 www.eyefilm.nl/tremblinglandscapes In hun korte film Waiting for the Barbarians combineren kunstenaars Joana Hadjithomas en Khalil Joreige panorama-opnames van Beirut met een gedicht van C.P. Cavafy. Het gedicht vertelt hoe een gemeenschappelijke vijand kan dienen als oplossing voor maatschappelijke onrust. Maar wat als de barbaren niet komen? Hadjithomas en Joreige maakten het werk in 2013, als reactie op xenofobie en opkomend nationalisme. Het heeft nog niets aan urgentie ingeboet. Waiting for the Barbarians is te zien in Eye Filmmuseum in de tentoonstelling Trembling Landscapes: Between Reality and Fiction (19 sep 2020 t/m 3 jan 2021) -- In their short film Waiting for the Barbarians, artists Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige combine panoramic shots of Beirut with a poem by C.P. Cavafy. The poem poses that a common enemy can serve as a solution to social unrest. But what if the barbarians don't come? Hadjithomas and Joreige created the work in 2013, in response to xenophobia and emerging nationalism. It hasn't lost any of its urgency since.
