Though a bit of an obscure entry in Bergman's filmography, the film is the first to really grapple with what patterns of adultery and failing marriages do to children. For a man who had already burnt through a collection of wives and mistresses in rapid order, the film proved a personal one, with Bergman reckoning with fatherhood responsibility before retreating into fantasy.
