Welcome to our family travel channel. In this bonus video, we show you the entire, unedited Changing of the Guards ceremony that happens at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier right outside the Greek Parliament building every day. The Changing of the Guards in Athens happens every hour on the hour. Rain, snow or shine, the guards will be there. They march in front of the Tomb, and change shifts in pairs using intricately choreographed moves. The Evzones (sometimes called the Parliamentary Guard) are selected among Greek men who are serving in the military. In order to be selected as a Guard for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a soldier has to be over 6 feet 2 inches tall but under 6 feet 8 inches. In order to become an Evzone, a solder must go through extremely challenging training that lasts for four weeks. Not everyone trained to be an Evzone will eventually make it. The Evzones have to stay motionless for a whole hour during their shift. Dealing with stillness is a very important part of their training. Other than the extreme summer heat and winter cold, some of the worst things for the Evzones are the insects that tend to persist due to the proximity of the Botanical Gardens. It’s worth noting that each Evzone normally has 4-6 hours of service per day! The uniforms worn by the Evzones are based on traditional 19th century uniforms which were used during the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Each uniform is hand made. What most people are most impressed with are the shoes. They are called tsarouhia, and they weigh 6.5 pounds each! There are different types of uniform, depending on the time of the year. They are all made of several different parts. There is a green / khaki summer outfit, a blue winter outfit, and a white Sunday / ceremonial outfit which is the most elaborate. For the Sunday ceremony, Evzones wear a traditional pleated kilt called a fustanella. Each of kilt is made with almost 100 feet of fabric and has 400 pleats symbolizing 400 years of Ottoman occupation. Last but not least, the Evzones wear very long socks - not tights - which are quite important in winter although they can be quite hot in the summer months. The Other Stuff...
