Derya Akkaynak, Ph.D., is a post-doctoral fellow mechanical engineer and oceanographer whose research focuses on the reconstruction of lost colors and contrast in underwater photographic imagery, which will have real implications for oceanographic research. Akkaynak has conducted fieldwork all around the world, from icy Antarctic seas to wild islands in the Pacific and she is changing the way scientists think about underwater research and conservation. Most recently, she was selected as a finalist for the 2019 Blavatnik Regional Awards for Young Scientists. Akkaynak is being recognized for achieving significant breakthroughs in computer vision and underwater imaging technologies, resolving a fundamental technological problem in the computer vision community. Akkaynak earned her Ph.D. at MIT & Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
