Tsunami surging to Hakozaki-cho of Kamaishi city (Footage provided by viewer) The Japanese text is followed by an English translation. Footage: Capture of the tsunami attacking Kamaishi city of Iwate prefecture. From the mountain trail between coast of Nehama (Unosumai-cho, Kamaishi city) and Hakozaki-cho, the fishing port of Hakozaki-cho is recorded. The video begins with the image of a cloudy sky, where water is already flowing out vigorously from the port of Hakozaki-cho, attacking a densely residential area. Voices of shock are raised by those surrounding the recorder of the video. From between the rows of windbreak at seashore, waves advance to the inner city rapidly. Houses within the town are destroyed in mere moments, washing them away to elevated grounds. A cloud of dust hangs all over town. We come to realize that the town has been completely submerged, aside from the top part of a hilly area. Some people mention that Hakozaki has now been taken by water in its entirety. After a while the backwashes begin and this time, the water and debris gush out toward the sea from town. The town's disastrous scene becomes more and more apparent. The Hakozaki fishing village center building with white walls that had sunk out of sight returns to the surface of mud flow in its ruined state. A million pieces of rubble, including destroyed houses fill up the water in reverse flow at the mouth of the bay. When the sun rays break out from the clouds again, waves have completely drawn and the whole town's grave situation of damage becomes apparent. The recorder of this video and other evacuees later spent the night on this mountain, rescuing the lives of several people swept up by the waves and picking up floating oil drums to ignite branches for a warming fire.
