Two gorillas have been successfully transferred to their new home at Projet Gorille Fernan-Vaz (PGFV) in Gabon, a project supported by FOUR PAWS. Niout 🦍 and Maya 🦍 are two Western Lowland gorillas, a species that is critically endangered throughout West and Central Africa. Both were victims of poaching when they were just little babies. Because unfortunately, gorillas are still regularly poached to be sold as bushmeat or fetishes, while their babies are destined for the (illegal) pet market. Niout and Maya got lucky: they were brought to the organisation Parc Assengo. Yet, since they were the only gorillas here and gorillas are social beings that need life in society for several reasons such as the learning process, protection and social interactions, it was decided to bring the two gorillas to PGFV in Gabon, in order to integrate them into a special gorilla rehabilitation programme supported by FOUR PAWS. The transfer 🚁 went smoothly and today, Niout and Maya are busy exploring, climbing and building nests in their new home.
