The team could have called itself the Miami Vice (just like the TV series) or taken a nickname such as the Sharks, the Tornados, the Beaches or the Barracudas. However, after a great deal of public consultation the nickname "the Heat" came out on top, and thus it was that on the 5th of November 1988, in front of a full house at the Miami Arena, the Miami Heat faced the Los Angeles Clippers in their NBA debut. They were beaten, for the first and certainly not the last time that year. The newly created Heat entered the history books (for all the wrong reasons), setting a new NBA record for the number of games lost at the beginning of a season, at 17. They ended their first year with a record of only 15 wins against 67 losses. The die however had been cast. Today, three NBA titles and 25 years later, it seems fitting to pay homage to the pioneers who first brought professional basketball to the city, retelling stories and anecdotes about those first, epic seasons at the end of the '80s.
