It was like Woodstock for railfans. Except without the mud. Or the naked hippies. On May 30, 2014, I claimed a spot among the thousands who converged on the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC for Streamliners At Spencer, a unique gathering of classic streamlined diesel power - plus one streamlined steam locomotive. As if gathering 27 vintage diesels in one place wasn't enough, the event was used to mark the start of restoration work on Norfolk & Western Class J 611. The J arrived during the 'preview day' event on May 29th and took center stage on the turntable during the opening ceremony on the 30th. With the 611 looking on from the museum's yard, the diesels kicked off a long weekend of spinning on the turntable, parading through the yard trackage, posing for night photos, and taking turns hauling the passenger excursion and photo freight around the museum grounds.
